      Description

The long wait is finally over. The 3rd edition of the “Textbook of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine”, which had been due for some time, is now out. There have been tremendous revisions in the practice of respiratory medicine since after the 2nd edition was published in 2017. The fastness of the development of new scientific facts and technology coupled with the massive challenge of COVID-19 pandemic during 2019–2022 made it urgent to revise, update, and add the whole-lot information which we have gained in the last few years. There is no doubt that the medical facts are now available on fingertips, widely on the internet, and through other numerous sources. However, there is no substitute to the standard textbooks for a comprehensive spectrum on a subject or a specialty. This is especially so for students and teachers of medicine who are interested in both the width and the depth of different issues. A separate section on Risk Factors for Respiratory Disease has been compiled to focus on their importance as well as to stress upon the prevention aspects for a general public-health approach to reduce the global burden as much as to manage the individual patients in the clinics. Respiratory Diagnosis section now includes several new and additional chapters on newer pulmonary function tests and lung imaging especially for the diagnosis of diffuse lung diseases and airway disorders. Different subjects on both tuberculosis and nontuberculous respiratory infections have been dealt with quite comprehensively. COVID-19 infection, even though the global pandemic is over, has been separately covered in view of its continued threat. The sections on diffuse lung diseases, sleep disorders, and respiratory neoplasm have been significantly expanded to cover the rapidly emerging subjects in these areas. Similarly, Pulmonary Vascular Disease, Pulmonary Hypertension, Respiratory Critical Care, and Systemic Diseases have been redone. Considering the special significance with reference to different issues of diagnosis and management of respiratory disorders during pregnancy, separate chapters on some of the critical issues have also been added. Another significant difference from the earlier editions is the addition of separate chapters on the global and Indian perspectives and spectra of some diffuse lung diseases among others. One of the important highlights of this edition is the inclusion of a few selected algorithms on approach to common lung problems (included in the appendix at the end). There has been a significant participation of authors from outside India, clearly an indication of their interest in sharing and spread of knowledge. This has helped in an enormous enrichment of contents and widened the perspectives. It is good to see a significant participation of Fellows and other associates as co-authors for several chapters.
